Group Fit Testing and Training

COHS offers group qualitative and quantitative fit testing services in addition to training for qualitative fit testers.

Fit testing is required for tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment, as per BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Part 8. Fit testing is specific to the user and respirator model to ensure an effective seal for user protection. Fit testing must be conducted by a fit tester with appropriate training in fit testing procedures as well as knowledge of the respirator to be fit tested on. Fit testing can be qualitative or quantitative.

Qualitative fit testing advantages:

  • Multiple subjects may be tested at a time, allowing for more people to be fit tested per session
  • Relatively low equipment maintenance and supply costs
  • No power outlet required, allowing more flexibility for testing environment

Qualitative fit testing disadvantages:

  • Only provides a fit factor of 100: depending on application and respirator type, this may not be adequate
  • Relies on the subject's sensory response to detect the challenge agent; does not work if subject is not able to sense the agent

Quantitative fit testing advantages:

  • Can be used for a wider range of applications and respirators
  • Is not reliant on the subject's sensory response to properly conduct the fit test

Quantitative fit testing disadvantages:

  • Only one subject may be tested at a time, per machine
  • Smokers may encounter issues with testing
  • Relatively high equipment maintenance and supply costs
  • Requires a power outlet
